What Are Chia Seeds and Why Are They So Good For Us?

If you remember “Chia Pets,” you can picture what chia looks like when planted and grown into grass! These seeds are rich in important nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, protein, and minerals, such as calcium. An article on chia seeds from the Harvard School of Public Health gives us a glimpse at the history of chia:

Chia seeds come from the plant Salvia hispanica L., and were at one time a major food crop in Mexico and Guatemala. Cultivated as a food source as early as 3500 BC, it was offered to Aztec gods in religious ceremonies. According to industry reports, the chia seed market is projected to reach more than 2 billion USD in sales by 2022.

Many Great Reasons to Eat Chia

Omega-3 and Protein Content

If you’re vegetarian, vegan or wondering how to reduce meat consumption, chia can help! Chia seeds are a complete protein and the richest plant source of omega-3s. Our coconut milk chia pudding is a delicious way to access these benefits.

An Easy-to-Digest, Raw, Whole Food

Because of their delicate outer surface, chia seeds are easily broken down and digested when eaten in their whole form. That’s how we serve them at Nourish; our coconut milk chia pudding, Berry Breakfast Smoothie and Berry Breakfast Bowl are made with whole chia seeds.

Heart Health Benefits

According to the Harvard School of Public Health, omega-3’s like those found in chia can help to:

  • decrease inflammation
  • lower cholesterol
  • regulate heart rhythms and blood pressure
  • prevent blood clots

More Ways to Enjoy Chia Seeds at Nourish

Berry Breakfast Bowl: This creamy bowl is a blend of blueberries, strawberries and bananas, topped with chia seeds and shredded coconut.

Berry Breakfast Smoothie: We make this filling, energizing smoothie with strawberries, blueberries, banana, spinach, coconut milk, hemp, oats, and chia seeds.

Chia is Delicious!

Chia’s tiny seeds are mild in flavor, and can absorb up to 10 times their weight in liquid! When chia is stirred into liquid, the result is a thickened, jelly or pudding-like texture. That’s what makes coconut milk chia pudding so good. In our smoothies, chia adds chewy texture and a little crunch. Come into Nourish and try chia for yourself! Or choose from many other items off our organic, plant-based menu.
