Turmeric Benefits According to Ayurveda

Turmeric is a root that looks a lot like ginger until you slice off a chunk, and see the deep, rich orange color inside. Turmeric grows across India, Asia and Central America, and is widely used in these regions’ cuisines. In particular, turmeric is revered in India, where it has been used in cooking and medicinally for thousands of years. Turmeric benefits are currently being widely studied by scientists. CNN reports that “there are more than 15,000 manuscripts published about curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, and about 50 manuscripts added to this collection each week, according to the National Institutes of Health.”

Ayurveda, the indigenous Indian science of health, has recognized the benefits of turmeric for over 4,000 years. According to Ayurveda, turmeric kindles agni (digestive fire) and reduces kapha (the energy of stickiness/stagnation when present in excess) and ama (toxins). It is traditionally used for supporting the digestive tract, immune system, blood, liver, and joints. With its pungent, bitter taste and heating effect, it has the power to mobilize and cleanse the body systems.
